For many OEMs, sourcing a DC contactor is relatively simple at the beginning of a new project.

The engineering team defines the required voltage, current and dimensions. Samples are requested from several suppliers, tested and compared. Once the product passes validation, the project appears ready to move forward.

But this is often where sourcing becomes more complicated.

When a project enters mass production, the customer is no longer asking only whether the DC contactor works. The bigger question becomes whether the supplier can continue to deliver the same product, at the same quality, in the required quantity and on schedule.

From Samples to Production

During the development stage, a customer may only need a small number of contactors for testing.

Price Is Only Part of the Decision

Price will always matter in purchasing.

However, the lowest quotation does not necessarily result in the lowest overall cost.

If a lower-priced supplier has longer lead times, limited production capacity or difficulty supporting changes, the customer may face additional costs later through delays, revalidation or emergency purchasing.

This is why experienced buyers often look beyond the unit price and consider the supplier's ability to support the entire project.

What Happens After the First Order?

For many DC contactor projects, the first order is only the beginning.

As production increases, customers may need larger quantities, customized configurations or faster delivery. For OEM projects, selecting a suitable DC contactor for the production stage can help simplify the transition from prototype to mass production.

This is particularly valuable for OEMs developing EVs, energy storage systems, charging equipment and industrial products, where a validated component may remain in production for years.

Choosing for the Long Term

The right DC contactor is important, but the right supplier can be just as important.

A successful supplier relationship should extend beyond the first sample and first purchase order. It should provide customers with confidence in product consistency, production capacity, delivery and ongoing support.

For companies preparing to move a project into mass production, one question is worth asking early:

Can this supplier support us after the sample has passed?

That answer may ultimately be more important than the initial quotation.
